Hemorrhoidectomy Procedures Performed at Tampa General Hospital
Hemorrhoidectomy is surgery to remove hemorrhoids. If your hemorrhoids have become painful or have resulted in heavy bleeding, your doctor may recommend this procedure, which can be performed as an outpatient surgery but in some cases may require an overnight hospital stay. You may receive local anesthesia, a spinal block or general anesthesia.
In a typical hemorrhoid removal surgery, a small incision is made around the hemorrhoids. A knife, scissors or cautery pencil is then used to remove the hemorrhoids. Another type of hemorrhoid surgery, called a stapled hemorrhoidopexy, uses a circular stapling device to remove the blood supply to the hemorrhoidal tissue and close the wound.??
You can expect some pain after a hemorrhoidectomy, so your doctor may prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter medicine to relieve discomfort. After the surgery:
- Some bleeding is normal, particularly with the first bowel movement.
- Drink lots of liquids and avoid spicy foods.
- Return to your regular diet gradually.
- Your doctor may also recommend frequent soaks in warm water to help relieve pain and muscles spasms.
- Be patient. Full recovery from a hemorrhoidectomy takes about two to three weeks.
