Types of Reproductive Hormone Disorders
Reproductive hormone disorders impact the lives of many men and women. These disorders occur when abnormal levels of estrogen and androgen sex hormones develop, and can cause infertility and other health issues. While estrogen is the primary sex hormone for women and the androgen testosterone is the primary sex hormone for men, both men and women can have abnormal levels of either hormone.
The reproductive hormone disorders that cause abnormal levels of estrogen and testosterone in men and women include:
- Ovarian insufficiency 每 Also called female hypogonadism, this condition occurs when a woman＊s ovaries no longer function properly before the age of 40. As a result, the ovaries do not produce enough estrogen or release eggs regularly, often causing infertility, osteoporosis, and depression.?
- Male hypogonadism 每 This condition occurs when the testicles do not produce enough testosterone, causing infertility, a decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, and loss of secondary male sex characteristics.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome 每 Women with this condition develop cysts on their ovaries that cause hormonal imbalances, particularly elevated androgen levels, which cause menstrual complications, fertility problems, and other health issues.
These reproductive hormone disorders can be caused by a failure of the ovaries or testicles themselves or by other health issues that prevent the proper functioning of the gonads, such as pituitary, thyroid, and hypothalamus disorders.?
