Spinal Tumor Symptoms
Spinal tumor symptoms do not always follow a predictable pattern and can vary widely depending on the type of tumor as well as its location. However, symptoms most commonly manifest as pain in the neck and/or back, growing progressively worse over time. This is because a spinal tumor ¨C a mass of tissue resulting from uncontrolled cell growth ¨C typically accumulates around the spine. Since there is little space within the spinal cavity, the tumor will often press on the spinal cord, causing pain and discomfort.
Though pain is one of the most common spinal tumor symptoms, there are numerous others, including:
- Difficulty with walking and standing
- Loss of bladder and bowel function
- Decreased sensitivity and/or sensation throughout the body
- Muscle weakness
As with all cancers, early detection of a spinal tumor is an important aspect of treatment. However, since there are currently no recommended screening tests for patients without symptoms, it is important to quickly address any potential signs of a tumor.
